N2 - The purpose of this study is twofold: it attempts to give an analysis of certain syntactic properties of a negative polarity construction in Japanese, and argues, based upon the relativized Minimality Condition and the assumption that Neg projects its own maximal projection, for the recent proposal that the Empty Category Principle (ECP) reduce to antecedent government. It is claimed that some peculiarities of the construction follow from the interaction of one lexical idiosyncrasy of the polarity item with principles of Universal Grammar.
