We discuss a nanometre-scale modification method for a urethane-urea copolymer film using an atomic force microscope. Topography of the urethane-urea copolymer containing an azo dye was modulated by the intensity distribution of the light. The copolymer film was locally modified using a strong localized optical near-field enhancement at a metal coated probe under the illumination of an argon-ion (Ar+) laser (488 nm). Nanometre-scale dots were successfully fabricated using two illumination configurations: that of direct illumination and that of total reflection illumination. In the case of direct illumination of the probe, the dot depth increased with respect to the illumination time of the laser, then showed a phenomenon of gradual saturation. On the other hand, when the probe was illuminated from the reverse side of the copolymer film using the total reflection configuration, the dot depth increased almost linearly with respect to the illumination time. Those experimental systems and the results presented here are conceivable for high-density storage and nanometre-scale fabrication of polymer material.
