Multi-scale analysis method for partially improved ground using a three-dimensional nonlinear elastic constitutive model

We developed a multi-scale analysis method for partially improved ground that uses a novel nonlinear elastic constitutive equation to characterize the isotropic, three-dimensional, and confined pressure- dependent behavior of ground in situ. In this paper,we briefly summarize the general framework of the multi-scale method, which is based on homogenization theory.We then present the constitutive model and relevant numerical algorithm and the validation of its basic performance.We examined the macroscopically anisotropic responses with a single macroscopic finite element and then carried out the three-dimensional simulation of an improved ground to demonstrate the capability of the proposed multi-scale analysis method. We validated the results through a comparison with the results of direct analysis where the heterogeneities of the improvement material were directly discretized.
