Multi-disciplinary design approach and structural sizingon composite wing

This paper discusses an aircraft design approach which enables to achieve requirements of aerodynamic property and structural efficiency. Focusing on a composite wing design problem, a multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) maximizing aerodynamic properties and structural efficiency is executed to obtain non-dominated solutions. This MDO method complies of low-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and structural analysis. Then, structural sizing is performed for typical result of non-dominated solutions to obtain optimized structural design minimizing weight such as laminate thickness, stacking sequence, stringer spacing, stringer height, and so on. Visualizing the distribution of extracted dominant failure mode for each structural element with Self Organizing Map (SOM), the correlation between aerodynamic shape and sizing result is discussed.
