Microscopic observation of iron carburization by coal under the presence of liquid slag

Microscopic high temperature phenomena were studied with two kinds of experiments using confocal laser-scanning microscope. The composite, made up of coal and metallic iron powders, was rapidly heated and the melt-down temperature and the liquid formation were observed with the aid of the image analysis. Microscopic "in situ" observation for the carburization of iron by graphite through liquid slag phase was also conducted with the model assembly of graphite/liquid slag/solid iron reaction couple. The resultant data were analyzed in detail.
