Microfluidic model of the outer blood-retina-barrier

A microfluidic outer blood-retina-barrier model (oBRB) is developed and used to investigate known inflammatory factors (hyperglycemia and hypoxia) on retinal epithelial cell (RPE)-choroid interactions. RPE cells and the vasculature were evaluated independently before culturing altogether. Morphology of vasculature as a result of different interventions was observed although more work is required to quantify and to perform statistical tests to conclude the results. Unlike the existing oBRB-vasculature models where vasculature development is the main focus, our device allows examining barrier integrity of the RPE, along with dynamic interactions between the RPE and the vasculature.
