Mechanics of cracked ferromagnetic plates in a magnetic field

This paper investigates, theoretically and experimentally, the effect of magnetic field on the fracture mechanics parameters of soft ferromagnetic plates. The analysis is based on a linear theory for the magnetoelastic interactions in a soft ferromagnetic material. An experimental study on ferritic stainless steel SUS430 specimens is conducted in a magnetic field to verify the theoretical analysis results. Strain gages are used to evaluate the magnetic fracture mechanics parameters. With increasing magnetic field, the magnetic fracture mechanics parameters increase. The theoretical predictions show excellent agreement with experimental observations.
