Mechanical properties of ultrafine grained aluminum and ultra low carbon steel produced by ARB process

1100 commercial purity aluminum and ultralow carbon IF steel were highly strained by ARB process. The highly strained materials were filled with pancake shaped ultrafine grains whose mean thickness was about 200 nm. Normal grain growth occurred during annealing of the ARB processed materials, and the sheets with various mean grain sizes ranging from 200 nm to 10 μm could be obtained. Grain size dependence of strength and ductility in the ultrafine grained 1100 aluminum and IF steel was clarified. The both materials with ultrafine grained structure showed unexpected yield drop phenomena. Strength held Hall-Petch relationship in all the grain size range investigated and the ultrafine-grained materials have strengths two to three times higher than that of the starting materials. On the other hand, the sheets with grain sizes smaller than 1 μm gave limited uniform elongation below a few percent. The limited ductility could be explained by plasticity.
