Measurement of thermal comfort based on four types of ventilation strategies in terrace house in hot humid climate of Malaysia

Rescent studies show energy consumption in residential sector has increased especially for terrace house due to space cooling in providing thermal comfort to the residences. A questionnaire survey involving 10 volunteers in a double storey terrace house has been conducted using seven points thermal sansations proposed by ASHRAE 55 and measurement equipment (Babuc M). Thermal sensations on four different types of ventilation strategies such as natural ventilation, natural ventilation with fan, fan, and air conditioner were observed. It was found that there were great differences of thermal sensation recorded by respondents regardless small temperature difference between air conditioning and other ventilation strategies. Moreover, wind velocity was more important compared with ventilation strategies. Moreover, SET* has been calculated in order to understand indoor environment for each ventilation strategy. There should be a new and improve house design that could provide maximum ventilation and air exchange rate for the building occupants.
