This paper describes some experiments for measurements of wheel wear and cutting force against effective cutting edge which affects the wheel wear considerably. In creep feed grinding, the total grinding force is larger than in conventional grinding, while the wheel wear is relatively smaller than in conventional grinding. The small wheel wear in creep feed grinding is thought to be due to the reduction in the cutting force. In order to evaluate the cutting force, an apparatus was developed capable of measuring grinding force pulse applied to a cluster whose peripheral length is sufficiently smaller than the arc of contact between grinding wheel and workpiece. It was found that the grinding force pulse in the wheel/workpiece interface increases linearly from the starting point of cutting and has a maximum value (maximum grinding force) immediately before the end of cutting and that at constant stock removal rate, both the maximum grinding force and the wheel wear decrease with an increase in wheel depth of cut.
