Among nevi originated from the epidermis and its appendages, epidermal nevus and sebaceous nevus are common for a plastic surgeon. Both of them appear as visible, circumscribed lesions at birth or in early infancy. Many therapeutic modalities have been employed for epidermal nevus including surgical excision, abrasion using laser and topical treatment with various chemicals, but no ideal treatment is available yet. As far as sebaceous nevus is concerned, surgical excision is recommended due to benign or malignant neoplastic changes. Although recent studies have indicated that the development of basal cell carcinoma or other malignant neoplasm is very rare, this remains a controversial issue. Recently a genetic mosaic caused by postzygotic somatic mutations has been shown to result in a nevus, which may be the clue to dissolving mechanisms of tumor formation in sebaceous nevus.
