A method for synthesizing ferromagnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanotubes by a template process with the help of a magnetic field was presented. The direction of the magnetic field was perpendicular and parallel to the AAO membrane plane. A higher-magnification image revealed that the γFe2O3 nanotubes were arranged roughly parallel to one another. The center parts of the tube appeared bright in contrast to the wall, confirming their hollow structure of tubes. The hysteresis loops of nanotubes were performed using a SQUID magnetometer to investigate the magnetic properties of γ-Fe2O3 nanotubes. Phase identification, microstructure analysis, and magnetic measurements indicate that γ-Fe2O3 nanotubes have been formed under a 12T magnetic field. Magnetic properties of the nanotubes will be improved by the doping of Co to satisfy the application in high-density magnetic recordings.
