Length scale of mechanical heterogeneity in a glassy polymer determined by atomic force microscopy

    Using amplitude-modulated atomic force microscopy with the cantilever having 1-nm radius sharp tip, nanoscale mechanical heterogeneity in glassy polymer was investigated. The correlation length of heterogeneous viscoelasticity was measured to be 2.0 nm. The value is consistent with the length scale of cooperatively rearranging regions at glass transition.
