Five kinds of amphiphilic polysilanes bearing a trimethyl-ammonium substituent are synthesized and then their spectroscopic properties are studied in detail. In the emission spectra of chloroform solutions, a broad emission around 400-500 nm other than that via the delocalized state is observed only for methyl phenyl silane-based polymers. The appearance of this low energy emission is explained by considering the intramolecular exciplex formation between an ammonium moiety and the Si-conjugated main chain. Based on this model, the exciplex can be formed in the case that the complex-forming pairs is close enough to easily approach each other, and an efficient overlap between their orbitals is acquired. In contrast to the normal case of the exciplexes, the emission shows little solvatochromic effect. This is possibly due to the peculiarity that the -delocalized state of the main chain is related to the exciplex formation.
