Inorganic impurity effect on the photoinduced hydrophilic conversion on ultrasmooth SrTiO3 and TiO2 single crystal surfaces

We report the effect of inorganic impurities on the photoinduced hydrophilic conversion on ultrasmooth SrTiO3 and TiO2 single crystal surfaces. A water droplet became well spread over on a TiO 2-terminated SrTiO3(100) surface after UV irradiation, whereas it remained beaded on a SrO-terminated SrTiO3(100) surfaces. ZnP and CuO impurities deposited onto a rutile TiO2(110) surfaces were found to suppress the hydrophilic conversion with increasing amounts of ZnP and CuO. No hydrophilicity characteristic of TiO2 was observed after UV irradiation at a nominal impurity thickness of only 5 Å, indicating that the surface-exposed atomic layer plays a crucial role in photoinduced hydrophilic conversion.
