In-situ observaton of the early stage of crystallization in undercooled Pd-Cu-Ni-P melt

The early stage of crystallization followed by the precipitation of crystalline phases in the undercooled Pd40Cu30Ni10P20 was examined The crystalline region with a diameter of about 15 nm was abruptly observed in the undercooled melt at 683 K. The polymorphic crystalline particles grew in the diameter range from 20 to 100 nm according to the decomposition. The rearrangement of Ni was much distinct as compared with other elements. Since the addition of Cu to the Pd-Ni-P ternary alloy was effective to suppress the diffusion of Ni, the quaternary Pd-Cu-Ni-P alloy can have a higher stability against crystallization than the ternary Pd-Ni-P alloy.
