In-medium [Formula Presented] spectral function study via the [Formula Presented] reaction

We report a helicity analysis of subthreshold [Formula Presented] production on [Formula Presented], and [Formula Presented] at low photoproduction energies. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal [Formula Presented] polarization [Formula Presented] and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip production mechanism. This signature is used to extract in-medium [Formula Presented] invariant mass distributions for all three nuclei in a manner which is less model dependent than previous measurements. The results are compared to kinematic and phenomenological models of the [Formula Presented] spectral function. The [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] data distributions support the role of [Formula Presented] excitation in shaping the in-medium [Formula Presented] invariant mass distribution, while the [Formula Presented] distributions are consistent with quasi-free [Formula Presented] production. The data support an in-medium modification of the [Formula Presented] invariant mass distribution.
