Activities of extrinsic and intrinsic hand muscles during hand tasks were analyzed by averaging electromyography (EMG). It was found that the intrinsic hand muscles particularly play an important role in fitting fingers to objects and stabilizing fingers during hand tasks. The stimulation pattern of cylindrical grasp derived from the EMG analysis was used to realize more natural and sophisticated finger movement in C4 spinal cord injury patients. It was found that finger movement of the hand is controlled by the cooperation of the extrinsic and intrinsic hand muscles. The application of electromyographical analysis to functional neuromuscular stimulation appears to be useful for restoring the function of paralyzed fingers.
