We examined the hydrogen permeation of a melt-spun Zr60Al 15Co2.5Ni7.5Cu15 glassy alloy. The hydrogen flow increased with increasing temperature or difference in the square-roots of hydrogen pressures across the membrane, Δp. At higher temperature or higher hydrogen pressure difference, the hydrogen flow is proportional to Δp. It is therefore interpreted that the diffusion through the membrane is a rate-controlling factor for the hydrogen permeation in this alloy. The hydrogen permeability of the Zr60Al15Co 2.5Ni7.5Cu15 glassy alloy was measured to be 1.13×10-8 (mol/(msPa1/2)) at 673K, which is as high as that of pure Pd metal. The present result demonstrates the possibility of future practical use of the glassy alloys as a hydrogen permeable membrane.
