Hydrogen generation from cellulose and polymers using mechanochemical treatment

Hydrogen has been expected to increase its future use, due to its utilization in fuel cells. A method for generating hydrogen through dry grinding cellulose based biomass and polymer was developed. The mixture of cellulose and an addictive (inorganic compound) was subjected to dry grinding by a mill under air, then, the ground product was heated up to about 500°C in non-oxidative environment The gases were generated during heating. H2, CH4, CO, and CO2 were detected. The mechanism for highly pure H2 generating from the cellulose may be due to the formation of CaCO3 as byproduct. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montreal, Quebec, Canada 8/23-27/2009).
