Hollow waveguides for medical infrared lasers

With the emergence of flexible, low-loss hollow waveguides, the use of infrared lasers for medical applications has grown rapidly in recent years. The current status of hollow waveguides that are made of glass and metal, having dielectric coatings for the low attenuation losses, are reviewed. The transmission characteristics and the fabrication processes of waveguides developed by a variety of groups are reported. In addition to the fibers, some attachments for the delivery system, such as a launching coupler, a beam modifying device and handpieces are introduced. These attachments are designed to make the delivery system more functional and convenient.
