High-mobility C60 field-effect transistors fabricated on molecular-wetting controlled substrates

Highly oriented crystalline C60 thin films on molecular substrates covered with an atomically flat pentacene (C22H 14) monomolecular substrates for wetting control, was investigated. The molecular wettability of a substrate controls the distance of the lateral migration of the molecules at the film growth, and largely determines the morphology of the growing films. faceted crystalline C60 grains with very smooth surfaces were observed when a pentacene buffer was used. The C 60 film without a pentacene monolayer buffer showed amorphous features, while the C60 film with a pentacene buffer showed strong diffraction peaks of a c-axis-oriented crystals. The concept of molecular wettability of substrates proved useful for the fabrication of high-performance crystalline organic devices.
