The structure and hard magnetic properrties of the rapidly quenched SmCo//5// minus //xB//x (0 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 1) and Sm(Co//1// minus //xFe//x)//4B (0 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 0. 74) alloy ribbons fabricated under various quenching rates were systematically examined. Metastable states, such as CaCu//5 type disordered structure and amorphous state were found in a wide composition range, 0. 6 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 1. 0 for SmCo//5// minus //xB//x and 0 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 0. 5 for Sm(Co//1// minus //xFe//x)//4B in the ribbons fabricated under high quenching rate. The maximum value of //iH//c ( greater than 18kOe) was obtained for ribbons which consist of the CaCu//5 disordered structure as a single phase. It was concluded that the formation of CaCu//5 type disordered Sm(Co-Fe-0)//5 compound with high Fe and low B content was considered to be effective to improve the hard magnetic properties of Sm-Co based alloys.
