In order to find a reliable method for predicting pump erosion, erosion development was systematically observed in a typical centrifugal pump with four blades under the condition of uniform nuclei-size-distribution. Severe erosion was observed in only a pair of the blades, and a significant difference in erosion rate between the other pair of blades was detected. The hard erosion rate, about 10 times greater than the other erosion rate, took place on the streamline starting from a large pair of holes which act as powerful cavitators. In future pump design, such cavitators should be removed to avoid hard erosion. Observations also show that hard erosion is closely related to the highly erosive longitudinal vortex cavitation.
