Glass transition phenomena and heat capacity of Zr0.55Al 0.10Ni0.05Cu0.30

Molar heat capacity, Cp, of Zr0.55Al 0.10Ni0.05Cu0.30 glassy alloy was measured for rod and ribbon samples by a thermal relaxation technique between 1.8 and 310 K. The Cp of the rod sample was also measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with the enthalpy method between 300 and 873 K; the two method are in good agreement within their overlap between 300 and 310 K. The glass transition was observed around 692 K, followed by subsequent crystallization around 725 K. From the low temperature Cp data, the electronic heat capacity coefficient and the Debye characteristic temperature were determined for both samples and compared with those of the component elements. The ribbon sample shows larger Cp than the rod sample. The difference in C p is discussed in connection with the preparation methods.
