Fundamental analysis on coagulation rate of aerosol generated from industry considering London-van der Waals force

Collection of dust generated from industry, including ironmaking process has been a tough task because any dust removing facility has low efficiency in fine fraction of the dust. To solve this problem, study on aerosol coagulation in an agitated vessel was carried out. Beginning experiments were tried with incense smoke. Experimental results were compared with theoretical calculation and some gaps between experimental data and calculation were found. Considering the difference, Higashitani's model was applied to estimate the effect of London-van der Waals force. The average value of Hamaker constant was estimated as 3.66×10-20 J. Further experiments of aerosol coagulation in an agitated vessel, were carried out with latex particles Fitting the experimental data with coagulation coefficient, α, to agree with theoretical calculation, the Hamaker constants were estimated as 8.3 ×10-20 J and 11.02 ×10-20 J for latex particles of 0.458 μ m and 0.309 μ m in diameter, respectively, close to the theoretical value, which means the experimental results in this study are reasonable. The significance of this study is to understand the detailed features of the aerosol coagulation under turbulent condition and maybe some useful information can be offered for the future application in dust collecting technology.
