The nanocrystallized Zr-based metallic glass fracture behavior is directly observed on an atomic scale using field ion microscopy (FIM). The fracture morphology indicates that the crack propagates along the interfaces between nanocrystals and the amorphous matrix. The macromechanical testing show that the appearance of the nanocrystals enhances the strength of the metallic glass. Which indicates that there is a strong interaction between nanocrystals and shear sliding of the glassy matrix during deformation and fracture.
