Fractal characterization of fractured rock surfaces and its application to estimate the strength of rocks

The purpose of this study is a characterization of rock fabrics and a quantitative assessment of roughness of the fracture surface by using fractal analysis. In addition, the relations between the strength and the fractal dimension for welded tuff specimens are discussed. Diametrical compression tests and fracture toughness tests were carried out and compared with each other. There was a good negative correlation between the tensile strength and the fractal dimension and a positive correlation between the fracture toughness and the fractal dimension. The anisotropy of fractal dimensions and the strengths in two types tests were observed, respectively. The fractal dimension is very sensitive to the applied stress state and affects its usefulness in studying microcracking. The laser surface profiler was used in order to measure the roughness with a high accuracy.
