An experimental investigation has been conducted to clarify the heat transfer characteristics of two elliptic cylinders having an axis ratio 1: 2. They were placed in a tandem arrangement and their angles of attack to the upstream uniform flow were in opposite directions to each other. The testing fluid was air and the Reynolds number based on the major axis length c ranged from about 15 000 to 80 000, the angles of attack a being 30°, 45° and 60°, and the non-dimensional cylinder spacing l/c from 1.25 to 4.0, where l denotes the streamwise distance between the cylinder centers. Further, a flow visualization study was made in order to understand the mutual correlations between the heat transfer and the flow features around the two elliptic cylinders. Local and mean heat transfer characteristics of the two elliptic cylinders are clarified and their correlations with the Reynolds number, the angle of attack, the cylinder spacing and the flow behaviors around them are discussed. A comparison of the present experimental results with the existing ones is made to clarify heat transfer features peculiar to the two elliptic cylinders.
