Fabrication and characterization of C60 fine crystals and their hybridization

The preparation of fullerene fine crystals with a uniform size and shape would lead to a new class of materials with specifically controlled electronic state. To this end, we have successfully fabricated shape and size-controlled C60 fine crystals using a reprecipitation method developed in our laboratory. The C60 fine crystals obtained were clearly monodisperse and show interesting various shapes such as spherical, rodlike, fibrous, disk, and octahedral. We were able to selectively control these characteristic sizes and shapes mainly by simply changing the combination of solvents used and the other reprecipitation conditions. In addition, core-shell-type hybridized C60 fine crystals composed of C60 fine crystals (core) and gold nanoparticles (shell) were also successfully fabricated for the first time. C60 fine crystals as a core were prepared by the reprecipitation method using CS2 as a good solvent and ethanol as a poor solvent. Gold nanoparticles were interestingly deposited on the surface of the C60 fine crystals core, without using any reducing reagent, when HAuCl4 aqueous solution was added to 10 mL of C60 fine crystals dispersion. The formation of gold nanoparticles is confirmed with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction images.
