A method is proposed for estimating stress state by using slip data recorded on fracture surfaces in core samples obtained from wellbores, assuming that the slip striations are created by frictional slip between two fracture surfaces. The slip directions and the unit normal vectors of the fracture surfaces are used for the estimation. Pore pressure is taken into account. The orientation of principal axes of stress and the stress ratio can be determined. The method is applied to four sets of data observed in two different geothermal fields and one of the obtained stress states is compared with that estimated by Anelastic Strain Recovery Method (ASR). The results well agree with those estimated by ASR.
