Estimation of sediment yield and benefit in northern part of Thailand using remote sensing data

Soil erosion and sediment deposition are serious problems in agricultural land of Thailand especially in the northern Thailand. This research aimed to generate maps of soil erosion and sediment deposition, and also to estimate the annual benefit of sediment in the northern part of Thailand using Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing data. Soil erosion and sediment deposition in each grid was analyzed by the revised universal soil loss equation model (RUSLE). The parameters of RUSLE were calculated by digital elevation with resolution at 1 square kilometer. The results show that soil erosion occurred in grid cells where the elevation was high, mostly near the mountain sites. While sediment deposition in the study area occurred where the elevation was low and close to dam area especially in the Ping River Basin. In addition, the benefit of sediment yield in the area depends on an amount of annual sediment deposition. Taken together, the evaluation of benefit occurred due to sediment deposition could support the decision for managing and controlling the sediment in the northern Thailand. Moreover, an estimation of benefit of the sediment should be considered one important challenge, not only for Thailand but also around the world.
