This article presents an analysis method of GPS array data which is aimed at estimatingstress increment filed that is associated with displacement or strain incrementfield that is observed by the GPS array. The method is based on an inverse analysiswhich finds self-equilibrating stress for a body with unknown stress-stress relation, when a distribution of strain is measured. With the assumptions of the plane stressstate and no volumetric inelastic deformation for the incremental deformation of theJapanese Islands, the stress increment is computed from data which are measured bythe GPS array that has been operating in Japan. It is shown that the stress increment isnot uniform and that there are some regions which have sharp changes in the stress increment;these changes are associated with changes in observed strain increment eventhough the distribution of the estimated stress increment is different from that of thestrain increment which is computed from the GPS array data. Some discussions aremade for the usefulness and limitations of applying the present data analysis to theGPS array data.
