Effects of Magnetic Stirring and Grain Structure on Ultrasonic Characteristics in Inconel Overlay-Welds

Application of magnetic stirring during TIG arc welding improved sensitivity of ultrasonic inspection by modifying the grain structure in Inconel 82 overlay-weld metal on SM490A plate. Orientation imaging microscopy(OIM) indicated that the efficiency of ultrasonic beam transmission increased with decreases in the average grain size and the frequency of high angle grain boundaries in the weld metal. The magnetic stirring during arc welding resulted in smaller grain size and lower frequency of high angle grain boundaries in the weld metal than the ordinary welding, and did not destroy the anisotropic grain structure, but made the grain texture stronger in the overlay-weld metal than the ordinary welding.
