Effects of heat treatment and heat cycle on martensitic transformation behavior of Ru-49Ta high temperature shape memory alloy

The effects of heat treatment and heat cycle on the martensitic transformation behavior of Ru-49Ta high temperature shape memory alloy have been systematically investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X - ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The results show that the Ms(martensite start temperature) and Af(reverse transformation finish temperature) of Ru-49Ta alloy are 1 065°C and 1 085°C respectively, and the transformation range (Ms - Mf) is 15°C. The martensitic hysteresis and transformation heat of Ru-49Ta alloy are, 22°C and 2J/g respectively. There are nearly no effects of heat treatment on the martensitic transformation behavior of Ru-49Ta alloy. The martensite is stable and exhibits no aging effect. The martensitic deformation in this alloy is by way of twinning. Thermal cycling has no influence on the transformation temperature and there is no thermal hysteresis. Thermal cycling slowly decreases the heat of transformation.
