Effects of addition of radicals supplied by plasma torch on burning velocity

Ignition and flameholding characteristics of a plasma torch installed in a scramjet engine were investigated experimentally and analytically. In particular, changes in burning velocities by radical addition were calculated, and discussed. A burning velocity was increased by radical addition for conditions of high temperature (more than 750K) and high radical concentration (more than 0.1%), and the ratio of the increase in a burning velocity was proportional to the radical concentration. Difference between nitrogen and oxygen plasma torch for reducing ignition delay, increasing a burning velocity, and ignition limit could not be observed. Therefore, nitrogen plasma is better than oxygen plasma as the igniter, because the deterioration of the nozzle is severe for the oxygen plasma torch.
