The effect of nitrogen in Ti(C,N)-Ni-Mo sintered alloys was investigated in comparison with Ti(C,N)-Ni sintered alloys. The grain growth rate of Ti(C,N)-Ni-Mo showed a maximum at N/N plus C equals 0. 5. The rate depends on the solubility of titanium in the nickel binder, the degree of coalescence of grains in the nitrogen poor alloy, as well as on the amount of liquid phase in the nitrogen rich one. Grain growth was suppressed due to the formation of double carbonitride, (Ti,Mo)(C,N), around titanium carbide cores. The rate controlling mechanism of growth is a second order phase boundary reaction.
