Effect of iron addition on Co-29Cr-6Mo alloys for biomedical applications

The effects of Fe addition on the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and cytotoxicity of Co-29Cr-6Mo alloys were studied for the possibility of new biomaterial applications. The amount of Fe addition was varied from 0 to 20 wt%. Increasing Fe content up to 10 wt% increases tensile strength and ductility of Co-29Cr-6Mo alloy. Anodic polarization test in the saline and the Hank's solution shows that Fe added Co-29Cr-6Mo alloys remains in passive state before breakdown. Moreover, it is found from a cytotoxicity test that Fe added Co-29Cr-6Mo alloys shows a good biocompatibility. These results concluded that Fe added Co-29Cr-6Mo alloys have a reasonable mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.
