Effect of compressive stress on phase transformation in Ti-Fe-Mo alloy during hot deformation

Ti-1.5Fe-2.25Mo (mass.%) alloy consisting of hep α phase and bcc β phase was investigated for microstructural changes during isothermal deformation at temperature of 1073-1123K. The results show that a modest deformation stress alters the phase equilibrium, restrains the hcp(α)-to-bcc(β) transformation and induces an unusual bcc(β)-to-hcp(α) transformation. These effects are believed to be caused by the stress-assisted diffusion of the β-stabilizing elements Fe and Mo. The atomic volumes of the involved phases are calculated to determine the effect of the new phase transformation.
