Effect of cold working and subsequent annealing on structural properties of Hafnium

Hafnium is the material applied as control rods in BWR. To get insights into its behavior during operations, in this work, we applied optical microscopy and X-ray diffractometry (θ-2θ scanning and pole figure) to investigate microstructural change in hafnium plates upon cold-working and subsequent thermal annealing up to 1273 K. The grain growth associated with recrystallization of cold-worked microstructure was evident at the temperature around 1000 K, and above depending on the amount of working. Besides grain coarsening was observed at 1273 K. The crystallographic orientation change during recrystallization was observed along transverse direction, which is different from that of Mg and is similar to Ti and Zr.
