The reduction rate of liquid iron oxide depends on the Fe**3** plus /Fe**2** plus ratio in the melts. The rate of chemical reaction at the surface can be expressed by an empirical equation. The effect of basic oxides such as Na//2O, MgO or MnO or acidic oxides such as P//2O//5 on the rate of CO reduction of liquid iron oxide was studied to confirm the applicability of the equation. Effects of additives such as FeS, CaF//2, or CaCl//2 on the rate were also studied to investigate the effect of coexisting anion. The experimental temperature was 1673 K or 1723 K and the flowrate of the reducing gas was 4 l/min.
