Experiments have been conducted to study the niobium, phosphorus, and manganese distribution between MgO-saturated FetO-MnO-SiO2-NbOx slags and liquid iron at 1600°C. It is shown that the niobium distribution ratio increases with the iron oxide content in the slag, while the phosphorus and manganese distribution ratios remain almost constant. The thermodynamic criteria governing the selective oxidation of niobium, phosphorus and managanese in the process of extraction of niobium from hot metal are discussed.
