Dimer structure of Sm3C70

A single phase of rare earth doped C70 compounds, Sm3C70, has been first isolated. The Rietveld analysis of the synchrotron x-ray diffraction pattern of the nominal Sm3C70 revealed that there exist extremely short Sm-C bonds. The short bonds are arranged so as to form a C70-Sm-C70 dimer structure. The experiments of the high temperature x-ray diffraction show that this structure is maintained up to 850K, indicating that the bonds are extremely stable comparing to the conventional interfullerene bonds.
