B-CLL cells from five patients were examined for surface markers and differentiation capacities in vitro, simultaneously. B-CLL cells from three patients bore surface IgGk, and sera from two contained monoclonal IgGk. B-CLL cells from one patient did not carry surface Ig. B-CLL cells from these four patients did not differentiate into C-Ig positive cells even in the presence of normal T-cells and PWM. B-CLL cells which carried surface IgMk did differentiate into C-IgMk positive cells in the presence of FCS, irrespective of the presence of PWM. However, B-CLL cells from this patient did not differentiate into C-Ig positive cells, when cultured in the presence of autologous plasma or normal AB human serum without PWM, and differentiation could be induced by the addition of PWM. Substances which promote the differentiation of B-CLL cells in FCS appear to be present.
