Development of biomaterials using marine-derived salmon collagen

We successfully prepared the thermostable scaffolds, such as a porous sponge, fibrillargel, and elastic gel, from salmon atelocollagen (SC) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide cross-linking. We applied these cross-linked SC scaffolds to the in vitro cell culture of human periodontal ligament cells. As a result, the attachment, growth, and alkaline phosphatase activities of the cells cultured on the SC scaffolds were the same or more than those on the porcine atelocollagen scaffolds. The SC scaffolds could serve as well as the traditional collagen as a scaffold for an in vitro cell culture and tissue engineering.
