Development of a simple method to construct finite element models of aortas from MRI images and its application to thoracic aortic aneurysm

A method way developed to construct finite element models of the whole segment of the thoracic aortas from T1-weighted MRI images. The shape of aortic axis was approximated by polynomial equations in axial images and the intraluminal shape perpendicular to the aortic axis was assumed to be circle. We Aneursym models were made by adding a fusiform bulge to the ascending, arch, or descending regions of the normal model. It was shown that the location and the eccentricity of the aneurysm might have stronger effect on the value of the maximum principal stress than on the pattern of the stress distribution.
