Development of a new generation reforming catalyst: Catalytic performance and carbon deposition behavior on nickel-magnesia catalysts

Catalytic performance and carbon deposition behavior in CO2 reforming and CO2-steam reforming of methane over nickel-magnesia solid solution with or without Ca ions added, supported Ni/MgO, and commercial steam reforming catalysts are discussed. No carbon deposition in CO2 reforming of methane was observed on Ni0.03Mg0.97O at 0.1 MPa, but at 2.0 MPa, carbon deposited on the catalyst. The addition of Ca ion to nickel-magnesia solid solution catalyst inhibited carbon deposition through the enhancement of surface basicity. It is strongly suggested that carbon is formed via methane decomposition on supported Ni/MgO and commercial catalyst, while the disproportionation of CO is the main source of carbon on Ni0.03Mg0.97O solid solution catalyst.
