Development of a CO2-solidification method for recycling concrete wastes

A new method for solidifying concrete wastes is proposed which utilizes a CO2-activated hardening process in this study. The CO2-solidification method has been applied to consolidate milling dust of Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete (ALC). It has been shown that the CO2-method allows pressure-moulded compacts of the ALC milling dust to be hardened at 20-100°C within 24 hr. The CO2-treated compact is shown to give relatively high bending strength, 12 MPa and to have good moisture control performance. Furthermore, polymeric short-fibers have been incorporated into the compact in order to overcome the brittleness of the CO2-treated material. The advantage of introducing multiple-cracking with short-fiber reinforcement is discussed in order to improve the strength and toughness of the CO2-treated concrete waste.
