Delayed fracture of cracked piezoelectric ceramics under electromechanical loading in three-point bending

This paper presents the results of a numerical and experimental investigation in delayed fracture behavior of piezoelectric ceramics under electromechanical loading. Delayed fracture tests were conducted on the single-edge precrackedbeam specimens, and the time-to-failure and fracture load under different DC electric fields were obtained. A nonlinear finite element analysis was also employed to calculate the fracture mechanics parameters such as energy release rate, based on the permeable, impermeable, open and non-linear electrically discharging crack models. The effects of applied DC electric fields and localized polarization switching on the fracture mechanics parameters are then examined. Moreover, the results were discussed in terms of the lifetime versus energy release rate curves.
