Defect analysis of lithium tetraborate single crystals by X-ray topography

The nature and distribution of defects in lithium tetraborate single crystals were investigated by X-ray topography. The major defects found in the crystals were dislocations, voids, and subgrains. The component of dislocations and the Burger's vector for some dislocations were determined. Voids could be new dislocation sources and the dislocations from voids were observed to propagate on the [112] planes. Cracking arose near the [112] plane when the dislocations and subgrains on the plane were not able to relieve the thermal stress.
